It’s Time to “Button Up Your Home”
Warm air leaking into your home during the summer and out of your home during the winter wastes energy and your money. Fall is the time to make sure your home is ready for what Old Man Winter can bring.
Should you insulate your home? According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the answer is probably “yes” if you:
- Have an older home and have not added insulation. Only 20% of homes built before 1980 are well insulated.
- Are uncomfortably cold in the winter or hot in the summer. Adding insulation creates a more uniform temperature and increases comfort.
- Pay high energy bills.
- Are bothered by noise from outside – insulation muffles sound.
The easiest and most cost-effective place to add insulation is to your attic. If you have less than seven inches of insulation in your attic, you can benefit by adding more. Most homes in our climate should have roughly 12 to 18 inches.
